A Strong Foundation

By A. Lin. Thomas

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:16-26, KJV).

When you look at your family, is your foundation strong? Or it is cracked up? Is it illuminated by the light of God and His Word? Or it is filled with darkness and despair?

When we examine our family life, we must remember that we are the house, but God is the foundation. Don't let your foundation be cracked-up, or your house (family) will be just as unstable and fall through the cracks.

In looking back over my life, I saw that our family had no stable foundation to build on. We were far away from God’s way of living. We had no proper guidance, because we had no proper foundation. Our family foundation was severely cracked, which caused our house to be in a perpetual state of imminent collapse. There can be no security when the foundation of the house is so insecure.

Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV) illustrates an improper foundation not built on the Rock of the Word of God, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

Luke 6:46-49 (KJV), offers the same warning, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”

The most important value in any relationship or family, must be God and His Word. Without Him front-and-center, we have no righteous foundation to stand on. When the devil tempts us, we must stand against him! When the devil attacks, we must stand against him! When the devil steals, we must stand against him! And when the devil, destroys, we must still stand against him! There is no way to defeat the devil, who seeks all of our destruction, except to cling to God, and His Word. This is a spiritual assault! And it’s a faith fight worth winning!

Did it ever occur to you that when the fall of man happened, we were all spiritually kidnapped? The devil lured away our first parents, and humanity has been under satanic rule from birth. We all came into this life as cute little baby sinners, bound up and cast out of the Kingdom of Heaven. The only means to escape his captivity and return to God’s Kingdom, is by rebirth in Christ Jesus, through the born-again experience.

John 3:1-20 (NIV) speaks of the born-again experience we must receive to have our foundation properly reset, “Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”

Proverbs 10:25 (NIV) declares, "When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation."

When setting your family foundation, always be mindful to establish your relationships, especially your mating/marriage relationship, on the foundation of Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Then, even though the storms of life rage around you, you won’t give up on God's love, because you will be deeply rooted in His Word, and be completely relying on His Love, trusting that He has not given up on you. After the storm has passed, you will look back at the storm, and see that it couldn’t destroy you, but it was used to reposition you for your best (family) blessedness.

Rejoice in the Lord and establish your family on the foundation of His Love, His Word, His Way, His Truth and His Life. From there you will experience His blessings.
